This week, students will be continuing their games/activities from around the globe! This week students will be participating in games from Egypt, India, Japan, and Israel. Students will learn interesting facts and cultural norms about each country! Students will learn an appreciation for other cultures and how the cultures shape the games these nations play!
I am thrilled to be back and ready to dive into our 2nd semester in PE class! This year is flying by SO fast and we still have a number of events/activities planned! During the month of January, students will be starting a unit on International Games! Students will participate in games/activities that are native to countries from around the globe! In addition to learning games, students will learn interesting facts about the country such as languages spoken, population numbers, flag distinctions and locations. During the month of February we will kick off our Jump Rope for Heart Event where we partner with the American Heart Association to raise funds for families in need. We will also get our running club up and going as part of our integration with Fun Fridays! More information on all events will continue to be a part of the weekly blog! I look forward to another great semester at Preston Hollow!
4th graders will take their PE ACP this Friday December 11th! I will be conducting review sessions this week during class to ensure our scholars are fully prepared for the examination! I am very confident that our hard work over many PE days since August will result in confident test takers and great scores!
Upon returning from Thanksgiving break, students will be spending the next few weeks reviewing some of their favorite lessons and activities that have been conducted since starting the academic year back in August. 4th grade students will be working especially hard as I prepare them for their ACP to be taken sometime during the week of Dec. 10-18 testing window! My hope is that students walk into that written assessment feeling confident in their knowledge of the health related fitness components, proper equipment usage, and best sportsmanship practices.
A review will be posted in the coming weeks right here on the blog should you wish to work with your students with these concepts at home as well. Last week Nov. 2nd-6th and this upcoming week Nov. 9-13, students will be learning the basic fundamentals of basketball through related practice and game activities! Students will practice and learn the skill cues for the arts of dribbling, passing, and shooting! Students will be given a variety of activities to both learn and teach others these basketball related skills. Students will also learn some basic rules associated with the game. My hope is that as we progress through the unit, students will grow in their knowledge, understanding and application of this challenging sport that looks to improve hand-eye coordination!
The specials team hopes that you will join us next month for our International Festival! The specials team has worked hard to compile a number of musical and dance performances by our amazing IB scholars here at Preston Hollow! The dates are as follows:
Tuesday November 17 Grades Performing: K, 3, & 5 6:00 PM in the Preston Hollow Auditorium. Thursday November 19 Grades Performing: PK, 1, 2, 4 6:00 PM in the Preston Hollow Auditorium. We hope you will join us to celebrate this event that exhibits our IB philosophies and practices! As part of our initiative in being a CATCH school “Coordinated Approach To Child Health” we are committed to healthy students in a healthy school. As part of this movement, I wanted to let everyone know about the upcoming Annual Dallas ISD Oncor Mayor’s Race 5K!
The Oncor Mayor’s Race 5K will be held on Saturday, December 12, 2015, and is part of the race weekend festivities surrounding the 45th running of the Dallas Marathon. This is a great family based event that helps to bring awareness of health and physical fitness for all age groups to the forefront! Dallas ISD and the CATCH committee encourages staff, students, their families, and members of the surrounding community to participate in the event. Registration, training guide, and other related information can be found at the following web address: https://www.dallasmarathon.com/events/mayors-race/ Our CATCH team will be working on flyers to send home in the coming weeks with our students to help endorse this community wide effort and participation with this event. I look forward to seeing a great turn-out from the Preston Hollow Family for the event! I encourage you to talk with your students about some of the recently vocabulary terms we have learned thus far in PE class. They include: aerobic activity, anaerobic activity, overhand throw, underhand throw, awareness, endurance, flexibility, & muscular strength. Try your best to incorporate those recent words when possible so students can continue to hear them and be encouraged to use them!
Within the first 8 weeks of school, our scholars have already participated in a number of PE related activities/concepts/units. All students have spent the past few weeks learning about the routines/procedures & safety in the PE learning environment. PK-5th grade students began their first unit with spatial awareness. This concept was taught through various chasing, tagging, & fleeing activities that incorporated a number of loco-motor movement skills; skipping, galloping, hopping, running, etc. Students learned about the function and location of the heart and lungs. PK-2nd grade students then moved on to a throwing and catching unit. Meanwhile, the 3rd-5th grade students were evaluated through a FitnessGram Pre-test to help me evaluate how I could most assist them in reaching the healthy fitness zone for the spring fitness test. Our current unit for the PK-2nd grade students is cooperative play through the utilization of the parachute and scooters. And right now, our 3rd-5th grade students are working through their catching and throwing unit.
